WWW Wednesday 3/11/21

WWW Wednesday is hosted by ‘Taking on a World of Words’ every Wednesday.

What are you currently reading?

The Manningtree Witches by A K Blakemore

I’m about a third through this and I’m finding it really slow going! It’s our Fiction Book of the Month in work and it’s being celebrated for its take on the Essex witch hunts, but at the moment I don’t feel like it’s doing anything groundbreaking. I suspect it’s going for insidious but it’s veering more towards boring! I do really like the main character, Rebecca, though; she feels really well drawn. We’ll see how it progresses…

Peanut Jones and the Illustrated City by Rob Biddulph

I’ve only just started this, but I’m enjoying it and the illustrations really bring it to life. I also love 5he inclusion of the Packed Lunch Post-its!

Starboard by Nicola Skinner, audiobook read by Eilidh Beaton

I’m enjoying this, but I have to confess I preferred Bloom and Storm, though I’m not loving the narration so that might be why. It’s a good story though, with Nicola’s originality and imagination stamped all over it.

What have you just finished reading?

Since I last posted a WWW Wednesday, I’ve read far too much to post here so here’s what I’ve read in the last week or so…

Uki and the Ghostburrow by Kieran Larwood

I loved this (as I knew I would!) and one particular thing came as a huge relief! I’m hoping to do a proper review of this soon, but it was a great finale to the Uki trilogy and I loved how it linked back to the first three Podkin books.

Skunk and Badger: Egg Marks the Spot by Amy Timberlake, illustrated by Jon Klassen

I cannot tell you how much joy this series brings me. Skunk and Badger are THE BEST duo, complementing each other so well. Quirky, warm, funny and beautifully illustrated, I’m SO glad there’ll be more to come from this pair!

What will you read next?

Something from the huge stack I’ve amassed while reading everything I had to read for work the last couple of months! Maybe The Red Gloves, Danger at Dead Man’s Pass or Harlem Shuffle… what would you choose?

What are you reading at the moment? Have you read any of these?

  1. I absolutely love Starboard but it is admittedly my least fave of the three, just because the other two are so unbelievably good. Do you reckon I’d like the Rob Biddulph MG? I’ve been unsure. And there are LOADS on that pile I want to hear your thoughts on.
I last finished Burning Sunlight, I’m now reading Rise to the Sun and I’m not sure yet what will be next!

    1. I’m about halfway through Peanut and I reckon you’d probably like it well enough, though I doubt it would become a new favourite. It does have a dog called Doodle though that I know you’d like! I can’t remember if you’ve read Ray Grey? I feel like you have and enjoyed it, in which case I definitely think you’d like this too.
I don’t know Burning Sunlight or Rise to the Sun – my cup of tea or a pass for me?!x

  2. I really need to read Skunk and Badger as it does sound like my kind of book. You have quite a TBR to choose from! I think I’d choose Dead Man’s Pass or Aveline Jones. I’m aiming to read Clock of Stars and The Song that Sings Us soon.
