WWW Wednesday 16/3/22

WWW Wednesday is hosted by ‘Taking on a World of Words’ every Wednesday.

What are you currently reading?

Pet by Akwaeke Emezi

I read this for the Children’s Book Prize with work in 2019 and it blew me away. I’ve had to return for a reread after finishing Bitter – a prequel of sorts and the story of Pet’s mum, Bitter.

A Thunder of Monsters by SA Patrick, audiobook read by Stewart Crank

I splashed out with some Christmas money on some wireless headphones so I’m back in the audiobook game! Really enjoying this!

What have you just finished reading?

Bitter by Akwaeke Emezi

I loved going back to find out more about Bitter and some of the other characters in Pet and seeing how the town of Lucille became how we find it in Pet.

It is a book which taps beautifully and believably into youth – art, smokes in the park, anxiety, friendships and butting heads, relationships and trust, music, creativity, change…the future.

It is also a book which feels very timely, with corruption rife, the powerful and wealthy doing just fine while everyone else is struggling and downtrodden, mistreated and undervalued. It is a book of protest and moral dilemmas – can hope be found when all seems hopeless? Is it worth fighting what cannot, it seems, be beaten? What is good? What is evil? What is fair? What is justice? Who are the monsters?

Libby and the Parisian Puzzle by Jo Clarke

I really wanted to love this, but sadly it wasn’t to be. It was a younger read than I’d expected and it just didn’t have the depth I wanted from it. Sweet and one I’d happily enough give to early MG readers just testing the mystery MG waters, but not for me.

What will you read next?

It’s been a slow reading week so I’m not sure I’ll get through much. I’ve been saying Young Mungo by Douglas Stuart for weeks, but I’ve got a week off in a couple of weeks so I’m thinking I’ll get stuck into that then. In the meantime, I have SO much to choose from I’m just going to pick book by book if and when I ever finish what I’m reading!

What are you reading at the moment?    Have you read any of these?
