WWW Wednesday 23/3/22

WWW Wednesday is hosted by ‘Taking on a World of Words’ every Wednesday.

What are you currently reading?

Everyone Dies Famous in a Small Town by Bonnie-Sue Hitchcock, audiobook read by Erin Tripp

I’ve only just started this. I’m putting a Carnegie shortlist display together in work, so am trying to read as many of the shortlisted books as I can! I don’t usually get on with short stories well, but I love multiple narratives and I believe these stories are all connected somehow, so it’ll be interesting to see how I end up feeling about this one…

The Ogress and the Orphans by Kelly Barnhill

I loved The Girl Who Drank the Moon by Kelly Barnhill and, although I’m not far in, I’m loving this so far as well! Lots of strands to pull together, an air of mystery and a wonderful writing style plus that mayor! I have high hopes!

What have you just finished reading?

Pet by Akwaeke Emezi

I read this for the Children’s Book Prize with work in 2019 and it blew me away. I just HAD to reread it after finishing Bitter last week and it was just as good second time round. Plus, it was good to refresh my memory on some of the characters from Bitter who I remembered from Pet but not well, it really helped to contextualise them and gave extra strength to Bitter.

A Thunder of Monsters by SA Patrick, audiobook read by Stewart Crank

A brilliant conclusion to the Songs of Magic trilogy, with some very timely and moving scenes, fantastic creatures and great twists.

Lean, Fall, Stand by Jon McGregor

I’ve just finished this and it’s incredible. It did take me a while to get into, as an emergency at an Antarctic research base wasn’t really my thing…BUT I’m so glad I stuck with it because it’s such a complex and clever book, with people over plot.

The writing is absolutely fantastic. The ability to really get us inside the characters’ heads and situations. It’s claustrophobic, it’s frustrating, it’s overwhelming, it’s entirely believable and it’s just so, SO well written.

What will you read next?

I’ve only just started The Ogress and the Orphans so that’ll keep me going for a while, but I do have the new book from Katya Balen ready to go! I’d like to keep working my way through the Carnegie list too!

What are you reading at the moment?    Have you read any of these?

  1. I’m very excited for the new Katya Balen! Last thing I finished was Our Sister, Again (which was amazing), I’m now reading My Heart and Other Breakables and then I’m hoping to read Fagin’a Girl/Wilder than Midnight tomorrow 😊😊 x
